The problem of aging the park of power transformers is quite urgent. This is mainly due to high prices for new equipment. Therefore, most power companies are trying to optimize their financial costs and extend the life of transformers already in service. This is much cheaper, and the quality of transmission and distribution of energy does not suffer. Let’s try to understand the reasons for the aging of power transformers and possible ways of extending their life. One of the ways to save money is to install oil filtration systems.

Causes of  transformers aging

But first things first. Analyzing the special literature on the operation of oil-filled electrical equipment, you can notice that most often among the possible causes of aging transformers are:

 

  1. humidity;
  2. temperature;
  3. oxygen

 

To a lesser extent, unfavorable environmental conditions and operation under extreme conditions. This is due to the fact that the duration of action of such factors on the transformer with respect to the time of its operation is negligible, while humidity, temperature and oxygen systematically affect the transformer and its components.

The prolonged influence of high temperatures adversely affects transformer insulation, accelerating its aging. In the end, this can lead to malfunctions in the equipment.

 

If there is moisture in the insulation system, then it is fraught with the decomposition of molecular chains, the acceleration of the cellulose aging process, and the deterioration of the dielectric properties.

 

Most often, moisture penetrates the transformer from the air, which is caused by improperly made or aging gaskets and seals. It is worth noting that water vapor can form as a result of the degradation of paper insulation. The higher the humidity level, the lower the electrical strength of the transformer insulation.

 

At a high level of oxygen and moisture in the oil, bubbles form, which lead to the appearance of voids and local tensions. This provokes breakdowns and accidents.

As you know, a new, “fresh” oil, designed for operation in various types of engines and systems, is no less dangerous and contains many harmful substances. The conversation is not about the quality of the fuel, but the possibility of getting moisture, gases or accidental impurities during transportation or storage.
